The reception

The opening reception for Fast Forward was wonderful - it was extremely well attended - over 200 attendees. The food was delicious, the beer tasty and the band, terrific. Awards were given out to the following artists: 1st Place: Brian McElligott, 2nd Place: Jim Winters, 3rd Place: David Ferro, 4th Place: Dana Scott and 5th Place, Debs Bleicher. Honorable mention went to Matthew Chansky, Kate Patsch and Nina Sabatino. Two photographs by Chelsea Schryver were sold at the reception.

Thank you so much to everyone involved. Pictures of the reception and photos of work from the exhibit will be posted on an internet site next week. Stay tuned.

Gala Opening Reception

Jenkintown Window Project

If you happen to be walking through Jenkintown, take a walk down Leedom Street, in between Greenwood Avenue and Summit Road and look in the window of the old Empty Hands Karate Studio. We have installed a window display of some of our exhibiting artists' work to help advertise Fast Forward and the Cheltenham Center for the Arts.

I am pleased to announce that another local business has donated an item to our exhibition - Pierre and Carlo Spa and Salon have donated a gift certificate for services at their spa and salon.

Since the 1930's, Tyler School of Art has played an enormous role in the arts community of our area. At about the same time that Stella Elkins Tyler donated her estate to Temple University to establish an art school, the Cheltenham Art Center was founded by two female ahead-of-their-time artists. With Tyler's departure, a void in the arts of our area will be felt. The Cheltenham Art Center is poised to fill that void with its wonderful educational programs and exhibitions.

However, the art center is struggling for survival. There is just not enough public support or funding for the arts. We, as supporters of the arts, need to make sure that the arts continue to thrive in Cheltenham Township, even with Tyler's departure!

Fast Forward is not only a farewell exhibition to Tyler School of Art, it is a chance for us to show how important the arts are in Cheltenham Township. Fast Forward is a fundraiser and donations such as Pierre and Carlo's will be used in a raffle to raise money for the art center.

Please consider making a donation as well. As much or as little as you can. Every little bit helps!

Allegheny Art (318 Leedom Street, 215.884.9242), Jenkintown's wonderful art supply store, has donated an award for our exhibition. As an artist, living and painting in Cheltenham Township, I buy all my art supplies from Allegheny Art. I almost NEVER drive into the city to shop at the larger art supply stores; when I do, I am sorely disappointed at the waste of time! They have everything I want and need at Allegheny Art at very reasonable prices. Thank you Anna for your generousity!

A note - the purpose of this exhibition is to highlight and celebrate the contemporary work of Tyler School of Art's 1988 graduating class. To that purpose, the large gallery at the Cheltenham Center for the Arts will be dedicated.

We will also be setting aside a second gallery to showcase the work of graduates between the years of 1988 - 2008. If you graduated between the years of 1988 - 2008 and would like to participate, please follow the guidelines listed in the prospectus to the right of this page.

We are extending the submission deadline to March 29th. Please email your images and resume to mtevere@hotmail.com and send your check via snail-mail or send your submissions on a cd via snail mail prior to March 29th.

The Drake Tavern is one of my favorite bars/restaurants in the Jenkintown area. It is located just up the street from the recently renovated Hiway theater and is a great place for lunch, dinner, or drinks after a night at the movies.

Under the Oak Cafe

Our latest restaurant sponsor is a wonderful new cafe located at 804 East Oak Lane. If you haven't visited this cafe, you should!

The cafe's mission is to "buy fresh, buy local". Their food is made from fresh, organic, locally-grown ingredients. Their specialty is their baking (peanut butter pie with a chocolate truffle topping, key lime pie, sweet potato pie with a crispy pecan topping to name a few), but they also offer a lunch and dinner menu (their quiche is delicious).

To get to Under the Oak from Elkins Park, make a left onto Cheltenham Avenue off of 611, and then a right onto East Oak Lane. They are on the left-hand side of the Oak Lane bridge. In 2009, Tyler School of Art will close its doors and pack its bags and move to new facilities at Temple University's main campus. The loss of Tyler School of Art to the arts in Cheltenham Township is significant, but the arts can still thrive in our community through exhibitions such as FAST FORWARD and the programs offered by the Cheltenham Center for the Arts.

The Cheltenham Center for the Arts is a non-profit institution which depends on public support.
